Crochet is a great craft to both relax and get the creative juices flowing! It can help with your mental health and self expression.
These beginner crochet tutorials are aimed at complete novices. The lessons will cover the basics such as how hold to the hook and yarn, as well as the essential crochet stitches. We’ll cover making circles, changing colours and combining the stitches. I’ll even be teaching you how to read crochet patterns!
Most of the lessons will have a practice swatch to put your new found knowledge into practice.
By the end of this beginners crochet course, you will have the skills and confidence to make hats, bags, blankets and an addiction to yarn!
For those that prefer learning by watching, at the bottom of the page is the video version of the lesson.
“If I were able to leave you with only one piece of crochet advice, it would be to always have fun. Learn the basics, but then just go crazy with your crafty self!” -Twinkie Chan

Welcome to Lesson 13 of the Beginner Crochet Series!
We’ll be using the knowledge we gained in the previous lesson, to make this easy crochet flower. We’ll be starting with a magic ring and working in the round. The petals are formed using double (single) crochet, half trebles (half doubles) and trebles (doubles). This flower can be attached to clothing, bags or a bobby pin as a hair accessory 🙂
I’ll be using UK terminolgy throughout this tutorial, with US terms in brackets. Here’s chart of the different terminology between the 2 countries.
The pattern is available in both UK and US terms.
Here’s the flower we’ll be making, along with the stitches used.
The pattern is available here, in both UK and US terms.
There’s nothing of note in the notes 🙂
The flower measures 3.75 inches in height and width.
We’ll need a 4mm hook and 3 colours of acrylic yarn.
The full crochet chart has 6 sections – 1 for each petal. I’ll be using just 1 section of the chart, which is repeated 6 times.
The flower starts with a magic ring and 12 half trebles (half double). Finish the round with a slip stitch. Col A can be cut – remember to leave enough to weave in!
Join colour B, chain 1 and work a double (single) crochet in each stitch. The stitch count will be 24. Colour B will be cut.
Join colour C and chain 1. The repeat is 1 Htr (Hdc) followed by an Htr (Hdc) increase. The written and photo instructions say to work the repeat 12 times. The chart section has 2 sets of the repeat so is worked 6 times.
Do not cut this colour.
The stitch count will be 36.
The petals are formed with 6 stitches – 1 Dc (Sc), 1 Htr (Hdc), Tr (Dc) Inc, 1 Htr (Hdc), 1 Dc, and a SlSt (SS).
The slipstitch closing round 3, is the the slipstitch for the 1st petal, so work a Dc (Sc) in the 2nd stitch.
The set of 6 stitches is repeated for each petal.
The height change of the stitches form the petal shape.
Step 1 – Work a Dc (Sc) in the 2nd stitch, followed by a Htr (Hdc) in the next stitch
Step 2 – Work a Tr (Dc) increase followed by 1 Htr (Hdc).
Step 3 – Work a Dc (Sc) and a slipstitch to finish the petal.
Step 4 – Repeat the petal instructions a total of 6 times. The slipstitch for petal 6 is made into round 3, the same place as the 1st slipstitch.
Each petal will have 7 stitches, making a total of 42 stitches.
The last round will polish the shape of the petals -this time with 8 stitches – 1 Dc (Sc), 1 Htr (Hdc), Tr (Dc), Tr (Dc) Inc, Tr (Dc), 1 Htr (Hdc), 1 Dc, and a SlSt (SS) made into round 3.
The last slipstitch of round 4, is also the 1st stitch of round 5.
Step 1 – Work a Dc (Sc) in the 2nd stitch.
Step 2 – Work a Htr (Hdc) followed by a Tr (Dc).
Step 3 – Work a Tr (Dc) Inc and a Tr (Dc).
Step 4 – Work a Htr (Hdc) and a Dc (Sc).
Step 5 – Work a Dc (Sc) followed by a slipstitch in round 3.
Step 6 – Repeat the set of 8 stitches for each petal. The very last slipstitch is worked into round 3, in the same place as the 1st slipstitch.
The stitch count will be 9 per petal, for a total of 54.
Next in the series is this simple crochet granny square – see you there!
Welcome!
My name’s Katie and I’m a crochet addict!
I learnt to crochet about 20 years ago whilst living in Ireland. I soon had a street stall selling my crochet hats and bags, eventually progressing to organising craft fairs.
I returned to street selling for a few years to fund my travels around Latin America, before settling down and becoming a mum to two cool kids.
I love working with colour and creating vibrant, detailed crochet and wanted to translate that into patterns.
