Beginner Crochet Lessons

Beginner Crochet Tutorials

Crochet is a great craft to both relax and get the creative juices flowing! It can help with your mental health and self expression.

These beginner crochet tutorials are aimed at complete novices. The lessons will cover the basics such as how hold to the hook and yarn, as well as the essential crochet stitches. We’ll cover making circles, changing colours and combining the stitches. I’ll even be teaching you how to read crochet patterns!

Most of the lessons will have a practice swatch to put your new found knowledge into practice.

By the end of this beginners crochet course, you will have the skills and confidence to make hats, bags, blankets and an addiction to yarn!

For those that prefer learning by watching, at the bottom of the page is the video version of the lesson.

“If I were able to leave you with only one piece of crochet advice, it would be to always have fun. Learn the basics, but then just go crazy with your crafty self!” -Twinkie Chan

Lesson 7 Moss Stitch

Welcome to Lesson 7 of the Beginner Crochet Series!

The moss stitch is a combination of Dc (Sc) stitches and chains.

The stitches are worked into the chain spaces which offsets the stitches.

I’ll be using UK terminology throughout this tutorial, with US terms in brackets. Checkout this handy chart of the different terminology between the 2 countries.

You can download the pattern here. There are separate PDFs for UK and US terms.

Moss stitch Front Page

Let’s take a look at the front page before we begin.

The notes lets us know this variation of the moss stitch uses 1 chain.

The gauge is 4 rows by 5 stitches per inch, resulting in a swatch that measures 4.66cm/1.85in in height, and 6.04cm/2.38in in width.

We’ll need a 4mm hook and acrylic yarn.

Moss stitch Stitch & Abbreviations page

The stitch and abbreviations page introduce a few new terms, like skip a stitch/chain and repeat instructions.

OK, so let’s get started!

Row 1

Step 1 – The first line states chain 12 and make a Dc(Sc) in the second chain from the hook.

On the chart the turning chain isn’t flush with the row of chains. For this pattern the chain isn’t counted but we will be working in it.

Step 2 – The 2nd line of row 1 instructs us to Chain 1 (Ch1), Skip a chain (SkCh), 1 Dc (Sc) in the next ChSp (Chain Space).

These instructions are between asterisks, which tells us this line needs to be repeated. I call a repeat a set.

On the chart there’s one chain above a chain, which corresponds to the skipped chain, followed by a stitch above a chain, for the Dc (Sc) in the next chain space.

Step 3 – The instructions tell us to make a total of 5 repeats.

You can see the repeats on the chart.

The stitch count will be 6 stitches and 5 chains for a total of 11 stitches.

Row 2

From this row, a chain will sit over the stitch, followed by a stitch sitting over the chain. Work into the chain space, not the actual chain.

Step 1 – Chain 1, turn your work, skip the 1st stitch, work 1 Dc (Sc) in the 1st chain space.

On the chart the turning chain is now above the stitch.

About

MyBday2 Katie McCrochet

Welcome!

My name’s Katie and I’m a crochet addict!

I learnt to crochet about 20 years ago whilst living in Ireland. I soon had a street stall selling my crochet hats and bags, eventually progressing to organising craft fairs.

I returned to street selling for a few years to fund my travels around Latin America, before settling down and becoming a mum to two cool kids.

I love working with colour and creating vibrant, detailed crochet and wanted to translate that into patterns.
