Welcome to Lesson 9 of the Beginner Crochet Series!
The swatch is a mix of Dc (Sc), Htr (Hdc), a mesh using trebles (doubles), and crossed trebles.
I’ll be using UK terminology throughout this tutorial, with US terms in brackets. Here’s a chart with the different different terminology between the 2 countries.
You can download the pattern here. There are separate PDFs for UK and US terms.
These are the chart symbols and abbreviations in both UK and US terminology.
I’ll be using UK terminology for this tutourial, US terminolgy will be in brackets.
There isn’t anything of significance in the notes.
The gauge is based on the mesh section and has 2 rows by 5 stitches per inch, resulting in a swatch that measures 7.62cm/3in in height, and 11.43cm/4.5in in width.
We’ll need a 4mm hook and acrylic yarn.
The stitch and abbreviations page has a new term – Tu-Ch which is the abbreviation for turning chain.
Step 1 – Start with a chain of 21 and make a Dc(Sc) in the second chain from the hook.
Step 2 – Work 1 Dc (Sc) in each of the remaining 19 chains for a total of 20 stitches.
The mesh section starts on this row. The turning chain of 3 counts as the 1st stitch.
Step 1 – Chain 3, turn, work 1 Tr (Dc) in the 2nd stitch, folllowed by a Tr (Dc) in each of the next 2 stitches.
Step 2 – The repeat, which is worked twice, is chain 4, skip 4 stitches, 1 treble (double) in each of the next 4 stitches.
The stitch count will be 12 trebles (doubles) and 8 chains.
Start with a turning chain of 6 – 3 chains are for the 1st stitch and 3 are to cover the 3 stitches below.
Skip 3 stitches and work 4 Tr (Dc) in the chain space.
Chain 4, skip 4 stitches and another 4 Tr (Dc) in the chain space.
Step 2 – The row ends with a chain 3, and 1 treble (double) in the turning chain.
The stitch count 10 trebles (doubles) and 10 chains.
The row starts with a chain 3 and 3 Tr (Dc) in the chain space.
The repeat of chain 4, skip 4 stitches, 4 Tr (Dc) in the chain space, is worked twice.
The stitch count is 12 Tr (Dc) and 8 chains
The row starts with a chain 2 and in the 1st stitch.
Step 1 – For this row we work the repeat of a Htr (Hdc) in the next 4 stitches and 4 Htr (Hdc) in the chain space, twice.
Step 2 – Finish the row with an Htr (Hdc) in each of the next 3 stitches plus 1 in the turning chain.
The crossed trebles start on this row and are worked across 3 stitches.
The turning chain of 3 is counted as a stitch.
Step 1 – Chain 3 and turn your work. Remember this covers the 1st stitch. Skip the next 2 stitches and work a Tr (Dc) in the next stitch.
Chain 1, then work a Tr (Dc) in the 1st stitch you skipped. That’s one crossed treble (double) complete!
Step 2 – The crossed trebles repeat is skip 2 stitches, 1 Tr (Dc) in the next stitch, chain 1 and work a Tr (Dc) into the 1st skipped stitch. Repeat this 5 times.
Step 1 – Chain 3 and turn your work. The repeat is – skip the 1st stitch and chain, work a Tr (Dc) in the next stitch, chain 1, then work a Tr (Dc) in the 1st stitch you skipped.
Work the repeat 6 times.
Step 2 – The row ends with a Tr (Dc) in the turning chain.
The stitch count is 14 Tr (Dc) and 6 chains.
This last row is Dc’s (Sc’s).
Step 1 – Chain 1 and turn your work a Dc (Sc) into each stitch and chain

Welcome!
My name’s Katie and I’m a crochet addict!
I learnt to crochet about 20 years ago whilst living in Ireland. I soon had a street stall selling my crochet hats and bags, eventually progressing to organising craft fairs.
I returned to street selling for a few years to fund my travels around Latin America, before settling down and becoming a mum to two cool kids.
I love working with colour and creating vibrant, detailed crochet and wanted to translate that into patterns.
